🧭 Pivot with Purpose: A Pep Talk
Session replays for Pivot and Free Time + Is flexibility an energizer or a drainer for you? This week's Strengthscope deep dive
Hi Friends,
Welp, my iced tea leapt out of my hands again for the second time this week, spilling onto the floor of The Drama Book Shop’s bathroom and resulting in me crouched down futilely mopping it with reams of single-ply toilet paper. Although I could have immediately gotten a manager, I was guilty because I shouldn’t have brought an outside beverage inside in the first place.
I’m really putting the tumble into tumbler, which is why I cannot be trusted with fancy things. At least this time, it was after my second keynote for Georgetown’s Pivot with Purpose series—no risk of staining my clothes, and a perfect slapstick bookend to the two virtual keynotes this week (after pre-event jitters led to spilling my iced tea tumbler for the first time two days earlier).
I am deeply honored to have helped kick off their summer seminars (welcome if you’re new here after attending!). This offering is backed by the Rockefeller Foundation to serve the tens of thousands of development professionals looking for work after U.S.A.I.D. was unceremoniously shuttered in February, affecting nearly 20,000 people in the U.S. and over 200,000 globally, plus millions of aid recipients.
After I finish a talk, even one I feel great about, my mind starts ticking off all the key talking points I missed or messed up. In writing, I can share them a bit more articulately, so that’s what I did for a two-part essay series on my other Substack, Rolling in Doh:
In Pivot with Purpose: A Pep Talk (Part One), I offered thoughts based Pivot; then part two continues based on Free Time (currently just $0.99 on Kindle!)
💬 Please do share any of your own wisdom and/or words of encouragement in the comments!

Now let’s examine the next energizer (or not) in our Strengthscope series . . .
💪 Strengthscope Deep Dive: Flexibility
Is flexibility an energizer or a drainer for you?
🔋 If flexibility energizes you, you remain adaptable and flexible in the face of unfamiliar or changing situations. You love being responsive and going with the flow, and you are often at your best in times of great uncertainty, even thriving in tumult.
Who annoys you: People who appear inflexible or uncomfortable with new ways of working or changing circumstances. They prefer greater predictability and stability at work and in their life generally, often resisting attempts to change and move forward, which may frustrate you.
Who is annoyed by you: People who are more planned, organized, or have a strong need for security in their career may see you as being too flexible and adaptable. They might regard you as overly optimistic in the face of change.
🥵 When in overdrive: You may have a preference for new over tried-and-true, without always considering the implications of your actions. Others may regard you as restless.
Self-check by reflecting: I love change, but I don’t want us to change just for change’s sake—is stability more important in this situation?
🪫 If flexibility is a drainer for you: You may be inflexible or uncomfortable with new ways of working or changing circumstances, preferring predictability and stability.
Reframe it by reflecting: Which energizers make me feel like I can be flexible?
