📚 READING
The Moth’s How to Tell a Story and Marion Roach Smith’s The Memoir Project.
For a summary of Marion’s best advice, check out her series of posts on Twenty Tips for Writing Memoir (or personal essays or op-eds).
I loved her “three-legged stool” for storytelling:
The answer to the question, “What is this about?” (ie. it’s not about you — it’s about a universal theme that your life will help illustrate)
Your argument
The scenes from your life that will be deployed to prove that argument
🍿 RE-WATCHING
Succession, while following along in the series of four books with full scripts (!) to see how it’s all laid out behind the scenes.
🎧 LISTENING
I’m loving Marion’s podcast too, QWERTY: A Podcast for Writers on How to Live the Writing Life.
🎉 FEATURED
I was delighted to be one of the first eight guests on my friend Khe Hy’s new podcast. Our conversation, Should You Play Status Games? explores games we've left behind, and the ones we're still playing (consciously or not).
+ Pair this with Alain de Botton’s fantastic book, Status Anxiety.
🧰 TOOLS
Now that I'm making writing a more regular part of my process, publishing two personal essays each week, I've taken the plunge and gone pro on Grammarly (they also have a desktop app). It's so worth it! It always catches what my dad calls "word fuzz" — places where I have incorrect verb tense, unnecessary extras, or missed a word entirely.*
*For example, it suggested I remove "more" from the first sentence of this recommendation. I left it only so you could see that it is, in fact, word fuzz! Next time it would be gone :)
